Dogs have been considered man’s best friends for a long time, but some breeds possess the physical strength to kill an adult human. Can dogs kill humans? Yes, they have in some situations. Some of the powerful breeds that have been implicated in human killings include Rottweilers, American Bulldogs, Cane Corsos, Japanese Tosas, and Pit Bulls. These are valuable things to know, even in Ohio, given the potential devastation involved with dog bites. At Dyer, Garofalo, Mann & Schultz, we’re here to help you through the process in such an unfortunate event.
While fatal dog attacks are rare, they do occur. From 2011 to 2021, 468 people died as a result of being bitten or struck by a dog in the United States, an average of about 43 annually. The annual number of deaths ranged from 31 in 2016 to 81 in 2021.
While a severe dog attack may occur on anybody, it does have several particularly vulnerable groups. Children, who cannot tell the aggressive mood of dogs due to their tender age and smaller size, will more often turn victims than any other group of citizens. It also applies to older people or disabled people because they can neither defend themselves nor flee the attacking dog. Such factors highlight a proper direction for prevention and protection.
The CDC’s data indicates that fatal dog attacks, while infrequent, have shown variability over the years. During 2011–2016, more deaths occurred among males than females; however, from 2017–2021, more deaths occurred among females than males. Fatalities doubled for males (from 15 to 37) and females (from 20 to 44) between 2018 and 2021.
Certain strong breeds, like Rottweilers, American Bulldogs, Cane Corsos, Japanese Tosas, and Pit Bulls, have been linked to fatal attacks. Studies also highlight American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds as causing severe injuries.
National Animal Health Foundation indicates that Rottweilers and Pit Bull-type dogs were involved in a significant number of dog bite-related fatalities in the U.S. While these breeds appear in reported cases, it’s important to note that a dog’s behavior is influenced by training, socialization, and its owner’s responsibility.
Knowing the ‘why’ can help in prevention. The common causes of dog aggression that trigger an attack by a dog include when the dog is fearful or anxious, threatened, or startled. Others are dogs that are territorial and may attack to protect one’s space, food, or owner. Aggression may also be caused by a medical problem like pain or due to an underlying health condition. Knowing such triggers might also help reduce the number of dog-attack victims.
Prevention from a dog attack requires both proper petting or taking care and public awareness:
